Which Son Did the Father's Will in Matthew 21? | Gospel of Matthew Ep 31

When Jesus asks which of the two sons did the father's will in Matthew 21, Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Vaticanus, and Codex Bezae preserve three different forms of the parable, and in Codex Bezae the answer names the son who did not go. How do three of the oldest large Greek manuscripts differ on the parable of the two sons, and what does the surviving evidence establish across Matthew 21:23 to 22:14? Tonight we begin with the authority question in Matthew 21:23-27 alongside Mark 11:27-33 and Luke 20:1-8, followed by the parable of the two sons in Matthew 21:28-32 and the witnesses to John in Luke 7:29-30 and Josephus, Antiquities 18.116-119. Next, we examine the wicked tenants in Matthew 21:33-45 beside the Hebrew and Septuagint of Isaiah 5:1-7, Mark 12:1, Luke 20:9, and Gospel of Thomas 65 and 66. We weigh the Psalm 118 quotation, the two readings of ethnos in verse 43, and the manuscript witnesses for and against the bracketed verse 44 in Nestle-Aland, including Codex Bezae and Papyrus 104, whose evidence depends on reconstruction. Finally, we compare the wedding feast in Matthew 22:1-14 with Luke 14:15-24 and Gospel of Thomas 64, ask whether the burned city in verse 7 requires a reference to the year 70, and set the wedding garment beside Babylonian Talmud Shabbat 153a.
